2011 WESTERN STATES TRADITIONAL RENDEZVOUS
Tygh Valley, Oregon
We had a great weekend at the Western States and thought we would share them with everyone.
We also wanted to serve a reminder that the RENDEZVOUS was Jim’s antidote to the North American Longbow Safari with the intent to honor the classic recurve bow. We had many of Jim’s original bows on display off and on throughout the weekend (unfortunately our photographer wasn't on the ball enough to catch the rack at the right time). Many owners had picked up their bows after Jim's death and wanted to date the manufacture and identify the materials used.
Thanks to all that brought their bows out for display. |
Saturday afternoon, Buck Davis and Jim Akenson gave a presentation on horse packing that went from A - Z.
Being expert packers, they demonstrated loading both manties and panniers stressing the importance of weight
distribution throughout their talk. The audience was shown how to pack everything from delicate items to
camp tools (include a 4' buck saw for trail clearing) and ways to keep it dry in bad weather. Of course, as
the crowning touch - an impressive set of elk antlers was lashed to the load.
Ideas for no trace camping were promoted and Buck concluded with safety tips and trail ettiquette for most
any thing you might meet along the trail.

Saturday evening, we invited Miriam & Larry D. Jones, noted hunter, photographer/videographer, writer and
game call designer to speak about his hunting adventures. Miriam and Larry have travelled to the dark continent
many times bringing back tons of memories, beautiful photos, impressive trophies and experiences to last a lifetime,
making for an enjoyable evening under the stars.
Larry also shared his most memorable moose hunt with the audience and NO, it was not the thrill of bagging
his own trophy moose. Larry was on duty, filming over the shoulder of his long time hunting partner, Dwight Schuh,
for a BOWHUNTER MAGAZINE TV segment. The bull had been called to close quarters when Dwight
loosed his arrow upon which it immediately charged. Fortunately, both were able to jump clear,
save themselves and the camera with the exciting footage.
